Timber Framing Workshop

Timber framing is the method of creating structures utilizing heavy timbers jointed via pegged mortise and tenon joints. It has been in practice around the world for over one thousand years, and was the primary method of building in the United States until the late 19th century. This method of building produces structures both strong and beautiful, from simple garden pergolas to elaborately crafted houses. After a brief discussion of its history, we will work on an actual timber fram structure using simple architectural drawing. During class we will: review the basic layout of the proposed structure; layout timber frame joinery; cut joinery using both hand and power tools. We will also discuss the following as they related to the practice of timber framing: structural and aesthetic design; finishing; assembly; raising; the use and sharpening of traditional hand tools. The scope of this workshop will accommodate skill levels from someone who has never used a chisel to experienced carpenter/builder/engineers interested in intermediate level design and joinery. Required tools: tape measure, sharp pencils, safety glasses, ear protection, work boots, adjustable combination square. Optional tools: chisels, mallet, hand saws (both western and/or Japanese). Chisels and mallets will be provided if needed.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) Implementation

Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a world class manufacturing initiative for optimizing the effectiveness of manufacturing equipment. TPM implementation teaches team leaders the key concepts of TPM to support companywide participation and implementation of the TPM lean process. One of the basic principles of TPM is that equipment operators and others who come in daily contact with production equipment can use their knowledge and familiarity with operating conditions to predict and prevent breakdowns and other equipment losses. The whole is better than the sum of the parts. They do this through regular cleaning, inspection, and lubrication standards and team based autonomous maintenance and focused improvement activities that tackle equipment related problems.
