What’s the difference between ESL and ENGLISH courses?
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes focus specifically on helping non-native English speakers improve English language skills, for academic, professional and personal development. ESL classes are taught by faculty with training and experience working with English language learners.

ESL classes:

use specialized instruction and materials designed for second language learning
help with adjustment to a new academic system and the social/cultural environment in the U.S.
provide skills necessary for interpersonal communication appropriate for many situations
teach students to be less dependent on bilingual dictionaries and the use of translation
bring a great variety of interesting students from all over the world, providing opportunities to make new friends
develop the student’s listening speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar skill, as well as cultural awareness
prepare students to listen to and understand the language spoken by other content instructors and to actively participate
offer a supportive environment, helping students build the confidence to ask questions and communicate in class

How are students accepted into the program?
All students must first take an ESL placement test with a counselor in CAPS. Based on the results of the test, the counselor will place you in the appropriate level course and help you register for your class.

How do I sign up for a class?
After you take your ESL placement test, a counselor will help you complete a registration form that you take to the Registar’s Office.

How do I pay for a class?
You can pay with a check, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), or cash. There is also a payment plan.

What courses are offered and how much do they cost?

What language is spoken in class?
English is the only language spoken in ESL classes. In beginning classes, the instructor speaks slowly and uses simple language and the students’ comprehension improves.
